Description:Huntington's disease is a neurodegenerative genetic disorder that affects muscle coordination and some cognitive functions. Huntington's disease is most noticeable during a persons middle age. HD robs its victims of their abilities to speak, eat, think, and walk over a period of years.
Inheritance pattern: Huntington's disease has a autosomal inheritance. A person usually inherits this gene with an expanded trinucleotide repeat.
Symptoms:Huntington's disease can show up in infancy but usually appears between the ages of 35 and 44 years old. In early stages of huntington's there are slight changes in a persons personality and physical skills. There are also random and uncontrollable movements called chorea.
Treatment/Prognosis: There are no known treatments for Huntington's disease. People with this disease are expected to live 20 years following the onset visible symptoms.
Incidence/Frequency:An estimated 30,000 people have Huntington's disease. HD affects men in women in both ethnic group. Neither gender gets it more than the other.
